25 km west of Lisbon lies Estoril, a classic and elegant small resort town at the mouth of the Tagus River. Often called the ”Coast of the Sun” or the ”Portuguese Riviera,” Estoril (along with nearby Cascais) became a refuge for the wealthy, famous, and even European royalty during World War II, when Portugal remained safe and neutral.
Grand hotels and Europe’s largest casino were built to welcome them, and it was here that Ian Fleming got the idea for James Bond. While 007’s birthplace may no longer be as glamorous, it is still a lively, cosmopolitan city. Around Estoril, you’ll find aristocratic mansions, world-class golf courses, a Grand Prix racetrack, and, of course, stunning beaches.
From Estoril’s charming little center, you can take a lovely walk along the sandy beach to its neighbor Cascais, with its streets, alleys, and numerous restaurants, cafés, and bars. Along the promenade, there are many small, cozy bars where you can enjoy the sunset—or why not join a game of football or beach volleyball down on the shore?
